Mastering FAQs
What is mastering?
Mastering is the final stage of audio production where your mixed track is polished for release. It ensures consistent loudness, tonal balance, and clarity across all playback systems — from headphones to car speakers. The goal is to make your song sound cohesive, professional, and release-ready.
Why do I need mastering if my mix already sounds good?
Even great mixes benefit from a fresh, experienced set of ears. Mastering corrects subtle issues, enhances overall tone, balances frequencies, and makes sure your track is loud enough to be competitive without having the life squeezed out of it.
What file format should I send for mastering?
Please send your final stereo mix in:
- WAV or AIFF format
- 24-bit (or higher)
- At the same sample rate as your session (44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, etc.)
Avoid MP3s or compressed formats, as they reduce quality.
How should I prepare my mix before sending it?
- Leave at least -6dB of headroom (don’t normalize or limit).
- Remove any mastering-style effects on your mix bus (limiters, maximizers, etc.).
- Double-check there are no clipping or distortion issues.
- Label your files clearly (e.g., Artist_SongTitle_Mix_v2.wav).
How long does mastering take?
Turnaround time is typically 1–3 business days per job. Rush delivery is available for urgent projects.
